Journalism is a counterpower to those in power. It is the mechanism through which citizens can know what politicians are doing with the taxes people pay, or how a specific regulation is affecting a minority that is not able to raise its voice. Journalists are not only telling a story; the profession also requires critical thinking.
For example, a story might be the beginning of a solution to an issue happening in a specific community. This cannot be achieved without a critical-thinking perspective. You can simply narrate the story, or you can create an article that connects with an audience and calls them to action. This is the kind of career that I would like to pursue.
Since 8th grade, I have known that I wanted to be a journalist. Journalism is a powerful tool that our society needs, and I know that this is the role I would like to take on. The kind of person I am, along with the things I have learned at TRU, will help me pursue this path.
I think that TRU has helped me develop some of the skills needed to achieve this goal. I have been able to connect with students from different backgrounds and work together to develop meaningful projects. I have also engaged outside the university by attending cultural events and activities that bring me closer to the community. I have created projects that require research and exploration of topics that have not yet been widely discussed. The intercultural community at TRU is one of the things I enjoy the most. Learning about different cultures, such as the Indigenous communities in British Columbia, has been a beautiful journey that has also helped me connect with my own background.
The instructors at the university have been a key part of my education. They have encouraged me to do more than just complete assignments; they have inspired me to create truly valuable projects that connect with my values.
One of the topics that has been most important to me is immigrant students and workers. I feel a deep connection with this community because I am one of them. Listening to their issues and challenges allows me to relate to them, and it makes me realize that what they go through is something that must be shared. It is not easy to be away from home.
